Today is Austin's 3 & 1/2 Year Birthday!!!

Wow!  Time has passed so quickly, too quickly, actually.  It's bitter sweet to see my baby has grown from a tiny baby into a boy, basically a man, in 3 and 1/2 quick years.  I am proud to be his mommy.  He talks too much, runs too much, and bumps his head way too much!  He can spell his name, write his name, and sing his ABCs.  He loves school, and is a social butterfly.  It's hard to believe that just 3 short years ago, he looked as if he was having seizures from simple baby acid reflux!  Now my son eats, and enjoys any food he wishes to!  Including his favorites, ice cream, candy, and Cheetos (lol, of course, on a limited basis).`
I must apologize, because I now see that other mothers have found my blog to be useful, and I have not been checking up on it this past year.  How quickly you forget the intensity of the Sandifers Syndrome when it's gone!  That's how it was for us too.  I was having trouble getting my sons prescription filled, as Prevacid Solutabs are very expensive.  I bought the Prevacid capsules over the counter, and made an applesauce mix for him at times, (this can be done, because it is the very same medicine, it is not prescribed, but a mother will do what she needs to do to keep her baby comfortable!), but I soon realized, he no longer needed the medicine!  I think I was more terrified than my son to stop the medicine.  I could  not bare to see him in pain like that again.
So I do intend to keep better tabs on this page, because I am more than happy to answer questions other mothers may have while trying to figure out what is happening to their sweet babies.  It is not fair, but babies are strong, and they will get through it.  Every experience brings a greater understanding to this thing we call "life," I am just grateful that my little man was able to get the treatment he needed by having a persistent mother who wouldn't give in.  We know more about our babies than any doctor.  At least that's how I feel :)

  1. Your son is so cute! I have a 3 1/2 year old boy too and yes, they talk SO much and are like little grown-ups! So much fun.
Both he and his little brother (4 months old) had/have reflux. The older one it took till 8 months to get it under control, because of doctors who didn't think there was anything wrong with him, and then a couple months on Zantac before getting on Prevacid. The Prevacid sure made the difference though. By a year we were able to get off medication.
The little one is on Prevacid already, but is still hurting despite 30mg of Prevacid a day (twice as much as the doc will allow--yes, as a mother you do what you have to do to help your baby not be hurting). I asked for a referral to a pediatric GI doc because I feel our doc's office just doesn't take me seriously. He is gaining weight appropriately and "looks healthy" so they aren't concerned. But they don't have to watch him be in pain.
I believe yesterday I was seeing a hint of Sandifer's, I was trying to feed him a bottle (I usually breastfeed) and he kept craning his head way up and to his left. He was fighting the bottle too, spent 30 minutes and I think I only got a half an ounce into him. He dream feeds well though so that's how he makes up his calories.
Anyway sorry to be long winded but thanks for your blog!

  2. First off, thank you so much for this blog and for speaking with me through email. Sandifers is HORRIBLE to say the least. We had to end up going with compounded Prilosec AND the right pharmacist to get my son's under control. If not for mothers like you putting your experience out there, mothers like me would be lost and even more worried than we already are! Thanks for giving me hope!

  3. Hi Gillian
I am a mom to a soon 5 month old son. I have since he was only a few weeks old felt there's something wrong with him but couldn't work out what it is. I first thought he was hyperactive as he is NEVER still. This has caused so much stress to our family. I am having post natal depression which I think is due to my boy being ill :( since I've gotten no help from the doctors I've tried to find an answer to my concerns through google. I am no certain he has reflux and sandifers syndrome. He has almost all of the symptoms listed. I have an appointment to a pediatrician on Thursday and it feels as if our lives is depending on that appointment. Please god let us get some help and medicine for my poor boy! I am contacting you to ask for your help as you have gone through the same thing. What shall I do to make the doctors understand what my boy is suffering from? So thankful for quick reply. Sorry for any spelling or grammar mistakes, I am Swedish. Thank you. X

    1. Hi Theos Mum, I'm not the owner of this blog but I wanted to comment if that's ok. There's a really good book called "Colic Solved" by Dr. Brian Vartabedian. It has lots of info about reflux and what to do about it, symptoms, tests, and medication. I also struggle with post natal depression because of my son's reflux, and very poor sleeping habits.
As for your pediatrician, you may find that if your son is a healthy weight, and appears healthy, that your doctor might not take you seriously that there is a problem. Persistence is key. If you don't get the answers you seek with your current pediatrician, then select a different one. Keep pushing until you get what your baby needs. You are his mother, and you know him best, no matter what the doctors say.
I would make a list of his symptoms, what it is that worries you and what makes you suspect reflux, and even videotape a sandifer's episode if you think it would help. The more educated you are on his reflux, the more the doctors will take you seriously. Ask for the medication by name that you'd like to try. Most doctors start with Zantac or Axid, then if that doesn't work they move on to Prilosec, Prevacid, Zegerid or Nexium. I hope you find your answers!

Incidentally, we have failed all the medications we can try for our little guy, so I am now trying homeopathy. I just started it so I have yet to see results but I am hopeful.

I hope the blog owner doesn't mind me replying!

      Good luck and take care.

  4. Hi

I'm the mother of beautiful 7 month old Olivia. She started showing the symptoms 2 weeks ago, shortly after starting solids. We're on our way to see a Pediatric Neurologist tomorrow morning to have an EEG done to hopefully rule out epilepsy. You're blog has been extremely helpful during this scary time. Thank you, all the way from Mpumalanga, South Africa.
