I do apologize for not updating this blog much. Life is busy, and Austin's reflux has subsided. Needless to say, I don't think about it as much as I used to. My son is now 2 years 4 months old. We still give him Prevacid Solutabs, but I am honestly at the point of trying to wean him. I really feel as if he may no longer need the medicine regimen! This is thrilling! We have since discovered a need for daily Clairiton as he had countless ear infections this year and the doctor suggested allergies as the root of the problem. I honestly think they were right this time!
I certainly hope doctors are becoming more aware of the severity of baby reflux, and are properly treating the condition with PPI's. PPI's are very mild and they will allow your beautiful child to be as comfortable as they should be. Thinking about how much pain my son was in during his first 6 months of life makes me feel so guilty! Why didn't I know? How did it really get that bad!? We all must learn from experiences though, and as a first time mother whose baby was very good at self soothing (small meals, back arching, etc), I honestly had no idea he was suffering until the Sandifer's set in. I was slightly concerned about spitting up, but family members told me it was normal, some babies spit up more than others. I would be suspicious the very moment my second child (if and when I am blessed with one), spit up. It is a hereditary condition, and Austin most definitely has taught me so much. His sibling will not have to suffer as he did. I am so grateful my little man is now happy and healthy. What a blessing it is to have gone through seizure like symptoms to discover my child is perfectly fine. I am still recovering from some PTSD symptoms from the whole situation, but each day the memory subsides a bit more. I hope your children are getting the care they need and that sharing my experience may save other mothers and babies extended torment. I hope everyone is having a lovely Summer! Take Care!

My son is recovering from acid reflux. I know the journey. I did not discover Austin's Sandifers Syndrome until solid foods at 6 months. Our lives were forever changed when he began taking Prevacid Solutabs at 6 months. Austin is now a very happy, healthy 15 month old weaning off his medicine. We are now down to half a tablet a day! It's crazy how children can go from looking like they're having seizures at 6 months, to recovering from the simple disorder by 2 years of age!
Thanks for the update and the helpful blog. My poor 6 month old has been on zantac, axid and omeprazole and we are now waiting for a prior auth for prevacid. The dr also ordered an upper GI because the solid foods seem to make him worse, so I've stopped all solids. He wakes up every 2 hours and every feeding he has the spasms. I'm praying that the prevacid works and that he will feel better too :)
ReplyDeleteMy son is 2 1/2 months and was just put on Zantac for possible sandifers syndrome. I brought him in this week because very often when we lay him in his back he tightens up, arms shoot out and arches back to one side. This was seen to cause him discomfort so I brought him in right away. EEG is scheduled two days from today. My husband and I are trying to be as proactive as we can regarding this issue. We are thinking about also trying chiropractic care as both my husband and I see a chiropractor and they says they could help. However, we still began giving him the Zantac so we could try and see immediate relief for our son. It is so hard to watch the seizure like, muscle spasms! I am a stay at home mom and the past few days have been a bit rough and emotional. I just want my son to not feel the pain this tends to cause. Do you recommend seeing a GI specialist also? Any help would be appreciated! I am glad you sons symptoms have subsided! He is a cutie!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your posts! RealtorSD, I hope the Prevacid helped your baby. As soon as my son got on it, he was like a different baby. I felt so guilty that he had suffered for 6 months prior, but was happy he finally got what he truly needed.
ReplyDeleteSolutions Devine, I hope you were able to find out what was troubling your son. Since my son was better simply by taking the prevacid, and was able to wean off around 2 or so, I saw no need to see a gi specialist. Although, if you feel you need one, do so, because I know the average Pediatrician is not very aware of the effects of Sandifers Syndrome on a baby. Most of the time, I found myself educating them, not vice verse.
I must apologize, as I do not check this blog much, especially not that my son is better. I am so glad I made it though, and my story can help others in need. I know I was desperate for answers when all of this began in my life, and I couldn't find many sites out there regarding someones personal experience with the disorder. I will try to keep better tabs on it, now that I know it is helping others!

Hi there,
ReplyDeleteI am a new Mom with a 2.5 month old baby boy who I believe may have this syndrome (he definitely has reflux, trouble sleeping on his back, arches his back, odd movements). I was just wondering how Austin is doing now?
