My life was forever changed for the better at 2:40 am on February 19th. My baby boy was finally in my arms after so many months of planning and dreaming. Thankfully, he was a happy, strong and healthy full term newborn weighing in at 7 lbs 12 oz and 19 1/2 inches long.
My plan was to breast feed. I hadn't thought about what I'd do if it didn't work, I just went with it. Austin latched fine and we had a very good nursing relationship. He was a very colicky newborn. Every time he ate, he cried for quite a while afterwards. We found that gripe water helped a lot. We were very thankful for this natural gas remedy. He grew out of the colic, but was never a big eater. 3-4 ounces at a time, every couple hours. I went back to work at 6 weeks PP and Austin was getting bottled pumped milk regularly. He soon started refusing the breast. I still don't know if he was spoiled by the bottle or if breast feeding just wasn't the most comfortable way for him to feed. Austin began eating the bottle hanging off my arm with his head leaning down towards the ground. We just thought he was being funny. Austin was always a spitter. I just assumed he was a, "happy spitter," never really stressed over it because people aways say, babies just spit up. He also was a terrible sleeper. Naps? What are naps?
We breezed through the first 6 months with no reason to think Austin was in severe pain. He was never the biggest baby at his checkups. He fell into the 50th percentile in the beginning, then later in the 25th, but never lost weight so there were no red flags to suspect baby reflux. Looking back, I should have known, but as a first time mother how do you really know what's going on inside your baby? Especially one who learned to deal with the reflux on his own and wasn't a big crier after the newborn colic.
Thank you so much for this blog! You have no idea how helpful your information is to me. My son Christian is dealing with Acid Reflux and at 1st we had no idea about the shakes. Our daycare provider told us one day that our son was shaking his arms and legs and she said she thinks it's a seizure of course my husband and I told our previous pediatrician who without diagnosing him scheduled an appointment to see a neurologist. Well a good friend at my job recommended us to see his pediatrician and so we did and it turned out that our new pediatrician dismissed the idea of a seizure and told us that his shakes are related to acid reflux and told us about Sandifer Syndrome. My son is also on Prevacid (liquid form) and right now he's trying out cereal but the rice cereal caused him to have flare ups and he did not want to take the bottle after that so now we're going to try the oatmeal cereal. He's only 13lbs for 6 months so he needs to put on weight my friend told me to add Probiotics to his milk we tried that yesterday so hopefully it will help along with the prevacid. Let me know if you have any suggestions on introduction to solids (cereal/food) and thank you once again for your information.

ReplyDeleteHe has been a spitter-up since birth, milk often coming out of his nose as well as mouth. He was checked at hospital and they were told 'It's reflux, he'll grow out of it'. A few weeks ago he developed a rash on his tummy and back, that looks very like the photo of your son - again, 'It's eczema, use moisturising cream', it has faded somewhat, but his skin is still very dry.
Needless to say, my daughter-in-law was petrified when his eyes rolled and assumed it was a seizure. It might still turn out to be, but reading your blog has given me great hope that it's the reflux.

My son was diagnosed with a rare form absence status epilepsy. His seizures show no symptoms until the seizure has lasted for hours! The only warning we had was he started acting only tired at first then gradually he started acting confused and from there for 24 hours he didn't know what year it was, where he went to school, or even what grade he was in etc. his motors skills were perfect and he talked to everyone normal the entire time, he just couldn't answer certain questions. The hospital kept him overnight and gave him fluids and in 24 hours he slowly started remembering and they said he was good and sent us home. We know now that he was having a constant seizure the ENTIRE TIME of his confusion! Almost 3 months later he begins having the same symptoms when I woke him up for his 2nd day of school. we are sent for an EEG, which revealed at 10 am he was actually having what the neurologist referred to as the worst EEG he had seen) we then were sent to a different children's hospital where they observed him until 8:00pm, all this time my son passes every test, he is talking and his motor skills are completely normal! They finally begin his EEG around 9:00pm. It reveals he is still in seizure! They are blown away. Say they have never seen an absence case like his and they quickly gave him a big dose of adavan which immediately stops the seizure and he is able to regain his memory immediately. Does anyone have a child who has these same symptoms? His neuro doctor ordered a brain glucose test, but when we went for a follow up last week they said the test had been canceled and they had no idea what happened? When I asked if they were going to draw his blood and re do the test, they said that his medicine was controlling the seizures so far so they didn't feel the need to do the test!
